Despite this, most data management professionals receive no training in how to produce effective diagrams. In the absence of this, they are forced to rely on intuition and experience and often make layout decisions that undermine communication. The result is that most diagrams produced in data management practice are very far from being effective: although they are intended as a way of communicating with business users and senior management, they mostly act as a barrier rather than an aid to communication. This tutorial describes a set of principles for producing cognitively effective diagrams: diagrams that are optimized for processing by the human mind. These principles are based on scientific evidence from a wide range of fields, including visual perception, cognitive psychology, graphic design, cartography, typography and diagrammatic reasoning. The same principles can also be used to produce more effective presentations and documents.\nTopics covered include:\n

What is meant by a ?good? diagram and how can it be measured
\n
The most common errors in IT diagramming practice and how to avoid them
\n
The grammar and vocabulary of graphics: principles of graphic design
\n
How diagrams are processed by the human mind: principles of visual perception and cognition
\n
Principles for effective diagrams: how to produce diagrams that communicate clearly and effectively
\n \n
How to use the same principles to produce more effective presentations and reports
